Gym Instructor Course introduction

The Certificate in Gym Instruction is essential for entry level employment in the health and fitness industry and is ideal if you wish to work as a Gym Instructor.
It will prepare you to gather client information and to design and deliver specific exercise programmes for a wide spectrum of client abilities in a gym or health club environment.

Gym Instructor Course entry requirements

  • Learners should be aged 16+
  • This is an entry level qualification for the health and fitness industry and therefore has no academic entry requirements.
  • We strongly recommend that you have experience of gym-based exercises including free weights.
  • You should be fit enough to cope with the physical exertion and individual participation involved in the course.

How will you learn on the Gym Instructor Course?

Learners can do a blended or online learning option of study.  The course duration is expected to last 2-3 months.

All learners are supported with:

  • Manual
  • E-learning
  • Tutor phone and e-mail support
  • Workshop Days

Learners can attend 2 or 5 workshop days to achieve this Certificate.  This must be stated at the time of booking. E-learning is a compulsory part of this training programme.

NB: Students are required to bring a participant to the assessment day.

How can I pay for the Gym Instructor Course

Learners may pay in full via Cheque or Card.

Alternatively a £150 deposit can be paid and you will be given access to your e-learning resources and a tutor will contact you.

The remaining balance can be paid via:

  • A maxiumum of 10 monthly instalments paying a minimum of £100 per month
  • Settled balance 4 weeks prior to the start of the workshop days

Gym Instructor Course qualification structure and assessment

Successful achievement of all six units must be achieved for the full qualification.

Unit 1: Anatomy and physiology for exercise assessment:

  • Multiple-choice questions set by the awarding body - 70% pass mark

Unit 2: Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity assessment:

  • Worksheet - 70% pass mark

Unit 3: Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment assessment:

  • Internally marked worksheet - 70% pass mark

Unit 4: Principles of exercise, fitness and health assessment:

  • Multiple-choice questions set by the awarding body - 70% pass mark

Unit 5: Planning gym-based exercise assessment:

  • Worksheet, Client Interview, PARQ, Programme Cards

Unit 6: Instructing gym-based exercise assessment:

  • Observed Summative Assessment
  • Session and Self-Evaluation
  • Observed Formative Assessment

Progressions from this Certificate include:

  • Level 3 Personal Training
  • Level 2 Instructing Circuits
  • Level 2 Studio Cycling
  • Level 3 Designing Pre and Post Natal Programmes

Qualification achieved and REPs Information

REPs L2
  • Active IQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing Gym (QCF)
  • This qualification provides access onto The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at level 2 and has a value of 20 CPD points.
