This year’s National Fitness Day is on Wednesday 27 September. In today’s blog we take a look at its history and what will be taking place for 2017.

What is National Fitness Day?

A celebration of physical activity and the benefits it brings to individuals and the community, National Fitness Day is an annual event to encourage everyone to get active.

Anyone wanting to take part on the day has access to free taster exercise sessions at thousands of gyms, leisure centres, clubs and parks.

In 2016, more than one million people took part in around 18,000 events. Those involved included the Sports Minister Tracey Crouch, former footballer Rio Ferdinand, the British Heart Foundation, Public Health England, the Royal Navy, the Lawn Tennis Association, the Royal Academy of Dance, Help for Heroes and many more.

Who is behind the initiative?

National Fitness Day was founded by the énergie Group in 2011 to make it easier for anyone to find a route into a fitter lifestyle.

Today the initiative is organised by ukactive (www.ukactive.com), a not-for-profit health body, which works all year round with its 3,000+ members and a range of fitness and leisure centres and training providers to improve the nation’s health through promoting a more active lifestyle.

Executive Director of ukactive, Steven Ward, describes National Fitness Day as follows:

“It’s a fun day with a serious message and the goal is to spread the fun of fitness and the exhilaration of movement to make more headway in overcoming the UK’s physical inactivity crisis.”

What are the benefits of taking part?

Taking regular exercise is known to increase mental health, wellbeing and improve quality of life and National Fitness Day can provide a kick start to those thinking of becoming more active.

The events provide a positive social atmosphere, and research has shown that exercising with others provides encouragement and makes you more likely to stick with it.

What’s happening in 2017?

The countdown began at the This Morning Live show at the NEC in Birmingham in May, with various health and fitness professionals, including Dr Zoe Williams, Max Lowery and Faisal Abdalla taking part.

Events on the day will kick off with Darcey Bussell CBE – judge at Strictly Come Dancing and the former principal of the Royal Ballet – leading a free Diverse Dance MIX (DDMIX) workout at Paddington Recreation Ground in London’s Maida Vale starting at 7.30am (arrival from 7pm, pre-booking required).

At 10am, the aim is for 10,000 schools to get their pupils moving for 10 minutes – a UK first.

Kirklees Active Leisure (KAL) will be opening the doors at its Sports Complex and all of its 13 fitness and leisure centres. Participants will be encouraged to complete a workout challenge, 3KAnyway, with the option of entering a prize draw to win 12 months free membership for two people.
