Today we’re taking a closer look at the detail of the new Active IQ Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing.
What is Active IQ
Active IQ a fitness organisation that designs vocational qualifications and provides high-quality resources for training providers. Regulated by Ofqual within the Active Leisure sector, it’s an award-winning organisation.
What are the entry requirements for the Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing?
All students must be aged 16+ and have a reasonable degree of physical fitness with a preference for experience at carrying out gym-based exercises.
There are no specific academic requirements, however, communication skills are useful, from reading and writing to the ability to take part in discussions and deliver presentations.
Before you start
Once enrolled, you will get an email with joining instructions and access to learning resources, which will include: case studies, knowledge checkers, mock exams and worksheets.
Before you attend workshops
Before attending workshops, you should complete your knowledge-based assignments and worksheets then send them in to your tutor by email.
They will include units on:
- Professionalism and customer care for fitness instructors
- Health and safety in the fitness environment
- Conducting client consultations to support positive behaviour change
These will be marked by CMS and feedback will be given, which you can use to amend and improve your work.
Leisure clothing should be worn to workshops, as they include physical activity; you should also bring a gym towel with you.
The course workshops take place over five days and include:
- Client analysis and fitness testing
- Goal setting and behaviour change models
- Cardiovascular training and prescription
- Resistance, free weight and body weight training
- Group inductions and delivery
- Summative practical assessment preparation
- Practical assessment
Full support will be given by CMS tutors during workshops, with guidance on the work required and the deadlines you should be working towards.
You will take one multiple-choice theoretical exam as part of this course, which will be on the Principles of anatomy, physiology and fitness. The exam will be taken at the premises of CMS on a different date from your workshops. Exams can be resat if necessary.
There will be plenty of learning resources to help you with your studies. These will include PDF manuals, e-learning content and phone/email support from tutors.
The following assessments will need to be passed to achieve the certificate:
- Unit 1 Principles of anatomy, physiology and fitness
- Unit 2 Professionalism and customer care for fitness instructors
- Unit 3 Health and safety in the fitness environment
- Unit 4 Conducting client consultations to support positive behaviour change
- Unit 5 Planning and instructing gym-based exercise

There will also be both modular and summative assessments.
What are the payment options?
The course can be paid for in full in advance or you can pay a £150 deposit and then pay the balance over three months with an interest-free payment plan.
