If you already have a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness/Gym Instructing and want to become a Personal Trainer, our Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training is for you.
You will receive an Active IQ Level 3 fitness qualification after completing this level 3 personal training course.
You’ll learn the science of applied anatomy and physiology in relation to exercise, health, and fitness, as well as the fundamentals of nutrition, as part of this diploma programme, and that is just the start of it.

You will receive your joining instructions and access to your learning resources through email once you have enrolled in the Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training.
Your personal tutor will then call you to set up a time for you to learn about the online learning portal, set study goals, and schedule your next support visit.
Throughout your personal training course, your experienced personal tutor will work with you to ensure that you have a clear action plan in place so that you can fully participate in your learning and receive guidance on what work needs to be completed and by when, ensuring that you complete your personal training course successfully.

For the Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training, learners can attend 3 or 4 workshop days.
The 3 workshop day option requires attendance on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th workshop days. This is to ensure that all assessments can be completed. If you choose to attend the additional workshop day, this 4th day would be a 100% learning days where you would review your understanding and practice the application under the guide of an experienced tutor.
Whether you choose to attend 3 or 4 workshop days in order to achieve your Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training, these dates do not have to be attended as part of the same cohort. For example, those learners wishing to attend all 4 workshop days in quick succession could attend the full 4 days of a specific cohort. Another learner may wish to space their learning out or be unable to attend a given date, therefore they could spread their attendance between 2, 3 or more cohorts.
We would advise learners to leave themselves sufficient time in order to complete suitable learning before attending workshop days. This helps learners maximise the learning benefit and chances of a successful assessment. Your tutor would advise you how best to do this.

Prior, during and after the personal training course, you will be supported by a highly qualified and experienced tutor. As a minimum, all personal training qualification learners are supported via mandatory 1 on 1 live webinar with your tutor on a monthly basis. During these visits learning activities are reviewed and new ones agreed with suitable support provided. As all learners have their own circumstances additional webinar, phone and email support is provided to learners when necessary.

The Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training is delivered over four days. The personal training workshops are delivered both on a weekday and weekend and are structured so you can attend all 4 days within a 4-week period or mix and match your workshop dates over a 6-month period, depending on your personal situation and preferred time frame.
Prior to attending your level 3 personal trainer workshop you will be required to complete online learning to achieve the more theoretical units and content of the course. Typically, you will have submitted and passed all your assessments for:
- Unit 1 Anatomy and Physiology
- Unit 2 The principles of nutrition and their application to exercise and health
- Unit 3 Understanding lifestyle, health, wellbeing and common medical conditions
- Unit 4 Encouraging positive health and fitness behaviours in clients, and completed
- Unit 5 Programme design and delivery for personal training Step 1, 2 3 and 4
Unit 5 requires the submission of a video assessment of you completing a consultation with your client, and a submission of a diet diary analysis and educational handout leaflet.
By completing these personal training qualification units prior to your attendance, you will have completed majority of the theoretical content of your level 3 personal training qualification and attained four out of the six units
When you attend the Level 3 personal trainer workshop, the days predominantly focus on the practical aspects of your qualification, as well as provide opportunities to embed some of the theoretical content that you have previously learnt.
Workshop Day 1
In the morning of the first personal training course workshop day you will learn how to assess your client’s fitness level and understand how to complete a series of static and dynamic fitness tests to establish your clients base line fitness, help you monitor their progress on programme with you, and discover how to use the data you collect to risk stratify your client to ensure you work safely with all levels of clients.
In the afternoon of the first Level 3 Personal Training workshop day, you will review your nutrition and dietary knowledge, linking the theoretical content with practical application. You will learn how to gather your client’s dietary information accurately and efficiently, practice analysing their diet diary and eating habits to identify strengths and areas of development. You will be able to competently prescribe recommended nutrition and dietary advice including guidance such as calculating your clients recommended calorie intake, applying appropriate macronutrient splits, provide guidance on food timings and frequency, as well as other health and wellbeing topics such as hydration alcohol and caffeine intake.
Workshop Day 2
On day 2 of your Level 3 personal training workshop you will learn the theoretical principles and practical application of advanced cardiovascular training methods. You will develop a deep understanding of the different types and methods of interval training, fartlek training, continuous and tempo training, as well as high intensity interval training.
Towards the end of day 2 you will delve into the complex anatomy of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitative stretching, also known as PNF stretching, as well as develop an understanding of the structure, function, and anatomy of the core. By the end of day 2 you will be able to apply advanced cardiovascular training methods, know how to off-set poor postures, be able to teach personal training clients how to brace and engage their core effectively and apply advanced stretching techniques to improve mobility and biomechanics.
Workshop Day 3
Day three of your level 3 personal trainer course contains the completion of a series of practical sessions. You will learn over 15 advanced resistance training methods and understand how to apply these on your personal training clients to maximise their training. Exercise technique learnt at level 2 will be built upon, covering key progression and overload techniques, including the use and development of the central nervous system.
Towards the end of day 3 we bring the content learnt from days 1, 2 and 3 together to explain how you can combine these areas into a periodised and progressive programme, learning about periodisation models and cognitive learning phases.
Throughout workshop days 2 and 3 you will be assessed by your tutor planning and delivering a series of advanced cardiovascular, resistance and flexibility stretching techniques. These assessments help you prepare for your final personal training qualification assessment on day 4 but also help you fulfil the assessment criteria for Unit 5 Programme design and delivery for personal training Step 5B.
Workshop Day 4
On day 4 of your personal training course you will deliver your one-on-one programme on a client of your choice. A client can include either a friend or a family member who will be required to attend the final personal training qualification assessment day for a period of 2 hours. This assessment will involve the delivery of a programme card for your Unit 5 Programme design and delivery for personal training case study, helping you fulfil your assessment for Step 6 of your Unit 5 Planning and instructing gym-based exercise unit.
By following the curriculum and learning pathway set out by CMS, you should have completed all assessments for the first five units of your level 3 personal trainer qualification.
Post Workshop Days
After attending the workshop days, your CMS tutor will support you in the completion of the final unit, unit 6 Professionalism and business plan to help you set up as a personal trainer. Your options are numerous and could include working as an online personal trainer, a self-employed freelance personal trainer and or an employed personal trainer working within a facility of your choice.
The career options available following the completion of your Level 3 Diploma in Gym instructing and Personal Training don’t just stop there. With CMS there are options to progress onto other Level 3 and higher qualifications such as the Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage, the Level 3 Diploma in Long Term Conditions and eventually become a Level 4 Specialist in either Lower Back Pain Management or Obesity and Diabetes.

Your personal training certification will begin with a thorough induction. In this 60 – 90 minute session we discover more about you, your career aspirations, your academic and job background, your interests, lifestyle, impediments to achievement, and learning needs.
After that, you’ll be taken to our ‘Netflix’-inspired learning portal, where you’ll be given an overview of the programme structure, as well as an overview of our various learning materials and how you can progress with your personal training qualification.

Demonstrations by Tutors
As part of your online personal training course you are able to review a library of tutor demonstrations. Demonstrations include exercise technique, advanced training method and client consultations.
Submissions that have been recorded
We strive to make your online and remote learning experience as helpful as your personal training course workshop days. To help you with this, you can send a link to your instructor with recordings of your method, delivery, and consultation style for him or her to review and give feedback on. This is a terrific approach to ensure that you are developing and implementing your new abilities as needed before, after, or in between your personal training course workshop days.
You can also expect your personal training course tutor, as required, to provide extra demonstrations and explanations via screen recordings and recordings of themselves performing the relevant demonstrations to promote your progress if appropriate.

Unit 1 is called ‘Applied Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise, Health and Fitness’ where we expand on the knowledge learnt from unit 1 and learn how to apply it to exercise and health as a certified personal trainer. We will discuss the same topics as the foundation anatomy and physiology unit but this time delve deeper into their specific impact, risks and considerations when applied to exercise as a personal trainer.
This assessment can be sat remotely from the comfort of your own home.
Unit 2 is called ‘The Principles of Nutrition and their Application to Exercise and Health’ here you learn all the nutritional fundamentals that you will need to provide accurate and appropriate advice to your clients as a certified personal trainer. You’ll learn the principles of macro and micronutrients, how to find credible sources of information, how to make use of nutritional tools and technology and how to effectively educate personal training clients about their nutrition.
This unit assessed via a multiple-choice theory paper and an assignment. This assessment can be sat remotely from the comfort of your own home.
Unit 3, ‘Understanding lifestyle, health, wellbeing and common medical conditions’, covers how lifestyle factors such as dietary intake, stress, fatigue, alcohol and levels of physical activity affect a personal training client’s health and wellbeing. You will also learn how commonly occurring medical conditions such as hypertension, obesity, cardiorespiratory disease, diabetes and stress and how they may impact a client’s lifestyle. We will also cover when to refer personal training clients with common medical conditions
Unit 4, ‘Encouraging Positive Health and Fitness Behaviours in Clients’ covers understanding the importance of communication skills to effectively communicate and engage with clients, evaluating and adapting your own communication styles.
You will learn techniques used to effectively communicate and engage with personal training clients to support them in making positive lifestyle behaviour changes to meet their desired goals. You will learn how to establish rapport and engage personal training clients in conversations about their health and fitness while collecting meaningful information and assessing their readiness to change behaviour. This includes knowing how to provide relevant information to personal training clients and close sessions in a way that encourages ongoing motivation and goal achievement.
You will learn how technological advancements can help personal training clients increase their activity levels and stay motivated and focused in line with legislation and professional standards.
This unit is assessed via a worksheet and written assignment. It is also partially assessed via your practical observations or recorded submissions.
Unit 5, ‘Programme Design and Delivery for Personal Training’ are where you learn how to plan and then deliver gym and personal training programmes. These are the core skills you need to learn as a certified personal trainer and you will be building on and utilising the knowledge you have learnt in the previous four units. Our expert tutors will be walking you through the important steps you need to take in building an effective and appropriate personal training programme for any personal training client.
These units are assessed through a combination of written assignments, video submissions programme cards and self-reflection documents. Please note: Students will be required to bring a participant to two of the assessment days.
Your video submissions need to be recorded in a suitable environment. This requires you and your personal training clients to remain in view of the camera and to be always heard. This can be difficult in a busy public gym with background music. But don’t worry, if you do not have access to a suitable environment in order to record your practical assessments, we also allow you to attend our own gym facility in Batley, West Yorkshire.
Alternatively, a member of our assessor network will be able to attend a facility of your choosing to conduct your practical assessment in person.
Unit 6, ‘Professionalism and Business Acumen for Personal Trainers’, is where you learn the core business skills for becoming a certified personal trainer. We will go through the basics of creating a business and marketing plans, how to manage your finances, the importance of social media and so much more.
This unit is assessed through an internally marked business project.

Learners wishing to complete the Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training should be:
- Be at least 16 years old
- Hold a suitable Level 2 qualification in Gym Instructing.
- The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential, therefore a degree of physical fitness is necessary.
- There is an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) and maths involved, so learners should have basic skills in communication and maths pitched at level 2 (as a minimum).
