There will be a chance to discuss your educational requirements as well as any concerns you may have, for example whether there are any potential obstacles to you achieving success on the course.

The introduction will continue with a focus on the programme you have signed up for. It will include a general guide to our e-learning platform, which was modelled on the Netflix streaming service, as well as details of how your programme will be planned out, the kind of resources you can expect to receive, and your pathway through your personal training qualification.
At CMS, we have been providing personal training credentials since 2008, which means that you can have total confidence that the process will be made as enjoyable and free of stress as possible.

A week or two after the orientation stage, your on-programme tutor will set up a webinar with you to support your route into learning.

This face-to-face time with your instructor will give you the opportunity to discuss all that you have learned in your studies to date. This is your chance to ask questions, to clarify any elements of your personal training course that you are not clear about, and to raise any further issues that you might have.

Following this first support visit, you will be able to discuss your progress in the personal training course at monthly webinars, which will run through the calendar year. Your training course instructor will be able to provide bespoke recorded materials and a web link allowing you to access these materials for 35 days. Our students have found this a really useful resource to help with their progression, as the content is designed to their specific needs.

Alongside the webinars, the course workshop sessions are available as a pre-record, so that you can watch them back at a later date to remind you of their content.

Before the personal training workshops take place, you will be given the option of viewing a range of pre-recorded material; this should help to prepare you for the sessions.

Demonstrations by Tutors

The application of what you study is a key part of the learning process. For this reason, students will be able to watch online demos of our professional instructors in action at any time.

Recorded Submissions

So that we can better support your online and distance learning, we would strongly advise you to produce your own recording of your style of approach, delivery and consultation. The best way to do this is to record yourself speaking and send this to your tutor, so that they can listen and offer feedback.

As you advance on the personal training course, your tutor will be able to provide ongoing support so that you continue to develop and use your skills on the days between your course dates.

They can also send you recordings in return, for example demonstrations or a more detailed explanation of aspects of the course, to suit your needs.

Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training content and curriculum

The Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training qualification is accredited by Active IQ, the leading awarding body in the health and fitness sector. It is also recognised by CIMSPA.

The Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training is structured into 6 units which help to develop you to become a successful personal trainer.

Unit 1 is called ‘Applied Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise, Health and Fitness’. This is where we expand on the knowledge learnt from unit 1, and learn how to apply it to exercise and health as a certified personal trainer. We will discuss the same topics as the foundation anatomy and physiology unit but this time delve deeper into their specific impact, risks and considerations when applied to exercise as a personal trainer.

This unit is externally set and assessed through a 40 question, open book, multiple choice theory exam which you will sit at the end of the unit. You need to achieve 70% to pass and will have 90 minutes to complete this assessment.  This assessment can be sat online from the comfort of your own home.

Unit 2 is called ‘The Principles of Nutrition and their Application to Exercise and Health’, here you learn all the nutritional fundamentals that you will need to provide accurate and appropriate advice to your clients as a certified personal trainer. You’ll learn the principles of macro and micronutrients, how to find credible sources of information, how to make use of nutritional tools and technology and how to effectively educate personal training clients about their nutrition.

This unit is externally set and assessed through a 40 question, open book, multiple choice theory exam which you will sit at the end of the unit. You need to achieve 70% to pass and will have 90 minutes to complete this assessment.  This assessment can be sat online from the comfort of your own home.

Unit 3, ‘Understanding lifestyle, health, wellbeing and common medical conditions’, covers how lifestyle factors such as dietary intake, stress, fatigue, alcohol and levels of physical activity affect a personal training client’s health and wellbeing. You will also learn how commonly occurring medical conditions such as hypertension, obesity, cardio-respiratory disease, diabetes, and stress, and how they may impact a client’s lifestyle. We will also cover when to refer personal training clients with common medical conditions.

Unit 3 requires the creation of a client educational leaflet.  As part of this assignment, you will be required to create an infographic or handout covering the bio-psycho-social model of health and illness, achieving 13 out of 16 marks. You must also achieve the minimum required marks on a given question to pass.

The achievement of the personal training worksheet and the client consultation, discussed in unit 5, are also required to achieve this unit.

Unit 4, ‘Encouraging Positive Health and Fitness Behaviours in Clients’ covers understanding the importance of communication skills to effectively communicate and engage with clients, evaluating and adapting your own communication styles.

You will learn techniques used to effectively communicate and engage with personal training clients to support them in making positive lifestyle behaviour changes to meet their desired goals. You will learn how to establish rapport and engage personal training clients in conversations about their health and fitness while collecting meaningful information and assessing their readiness to change behaviour. This includes knowing how to provide relevant information to personal training clients and close sessions in a way that encourages ongoing motivation and goal achievement.

You will learn how technological advancements can help personal training clients increase their activity levels and stay motivated and focused in-line with legislation and professional standards.

Unit 4 requires an assignment on the topic of recommending the use of technology to clients to be completed.  In this assessment you are required to achieve 19 out of 26 marks to pass.  You must also achieve the minimum required marks on a given question to pass.

Unit 5, ‘Programme Design and Delivery for Personal Training’, is where you learn how to plan and then deliver personal training programmes. These are the core skills you need to learn as a certified personal trainer, and you will be building on and utilising the knowledge you have learnt in the previous four units. Our expert tutors will be walking you through the important steps you need to take in building an effective and appropriate personal training programme for any personal training client.

These units are assessed through a combination of written assignments, client consultations, observations, programme cards and self-reflection documents.

Video consultations can be recorded at home in a living room or dining room.

Online personal training course learners are expected to record this delivery and submit online for an assessor to review, avoiding the need to attend assessment days.

Video submissions need to be recorded in a suitable environment. This requires you and your personal training clients to remain in view of the camera and to be always heard. Video submissions can be recorded in parts meaning the delivery of the session can be recorded an element at a time. For example, the introduction, warm-up and main CV will be separate recordings. This allows for manoeuvring around a public setting and uploading large video files more manageable. All recordings for an assessment submission must be made on the same day.

Alternatively, if an online learner does not wish to submit recordings of programme delivery online, they can still opt to attend assessment days to complete the practical elements of their programme.

Please note: Students will be required to bring a participant to one of the assessment days.

Alternatively, where you are unable to attend our assessment days and do not wish to submit a recording, for an additional fee, a member of our assessor network will be able to attend a facility of your choosing to conduct your practical assessment in person.

These arrangements can be fluid and your personal tutor will support you every step of the way in making the right decision for you.

This unit also requires a worksheet of 9 questions to be completed on the topic of personal training.  In this assessment you are required to achieve 17 out of 21 marks to pass.  You must also achieve the minimum required marks on a given question to pass.

Unit 6, ‘Professionalism and Business Acumen for Personal Trainers’, is where you learn the core business skills for becoming a certified personal trainer. We will go through the basics of creating a business and marketing plan, how to manage your finances, the importance of social media and so much more.

This unit is assessed through an internally marked business project split into three sections. The first section is initial business evaluation in which 12 out of 14 marks are required. The second section is market research from which 13 out of 16 marks are required.  The final section is business planning from which 45 of 56 marks are required to pass.

The personal training worksheet discussed in chapter 10 also contributes to the achievement of this unit.

By the end of your Level 3 Diploma in Gym Instructing and Personal Training you will be ready to start your career in the health and fitness industry. Whether as a gym instructor, online personal trainer, a personal trainer working form a gym or leisure centre, or a combination of all three.
